Tudor Pelagos LHD

2017 GPHG Sports Category Finalist

With category awards in 2015 and 2016, Tudor are on a hat-trick of GPHG victories with its much loved diver's watches. Can the Pelagos LHD 'leftie' score once again?

Boasting the brand's first fully in house Manufacture movement, the Tudor Pelagos was one of the most talked about watches of 2015, as critics, and more importantly customers descended on its classic utilitarian good looks, superb build quality and a lineage to trump any other, and the year culminated with the class honours in the GPHG Sports category.

Two years on and the Pelagos is back among the final six preselected contenders in the GPHG 2017 Sports category with a left hand drive (LHD) version of this award winning formula. Like its predecessor, it's as much a diver's watch as most people would ever need, with its 500m water resistance rating and helium escape valve more than capable of coping with the depths.

On its black eggshell textured dial the hour markings are bold blocks of powerful Super LumiNova, and like the three hands and the markings on the unidirectional rotating bezel, stand out in a vivid blue lume, ensuring optimal legibility in those low light environs.

As far as its sporting credentials are concerned, the Pelagos LHD is an excellent, practical instrument, and with the chronometer certified Manufacture MT5612 self winding calibre, which features silicon balance spring, it's also supremely accurate and reliable.

A visually striking watch, its brushed 42mm titanium case, with black dial and ceramic bezel inlay gives it a robust and purposeful appearance, and it still oozes casual cool. Those looks and dimensions means it's the most wearable of the six finalists, on an everyday basis.

But will it win? Well, that's the thing, because it already has won this category - or at least a mirror image of it has - in 2015, and with the only key difference between the Pelagos LHD and its sister being the 'LHD' crown position itself, it would seem strange for essentially the same watch to win twice. If the jury lean towards the diver style for a third consecutive year, then the Grand Seiko really is something new and significant.

The Watch Press prediction

No. The Pelagos LHD is a great looking watch, and with Tudor's excellent construction, high grade movement, and sub €4k price point, offers a really good all round package, but as mentioned above, I have my reasons. I also don't think a diver will win this year either.
