Panerai Luminor Marina Fibratech

Panerai Luminor Marina Fibratech

With a suitably dramatic hoopla, Officine Panerai are celebrating the 70th anniversary of their Luminor trademark, with a series of watches which includes this striking Panerai Luminor Marina Fibratech PAM1119.

It’s been 70 years since Panerai were granted a patent for Luminor, the highly luminous material which the company used to quite literally illuminate their iconic and aptly titled Luminor collection.  For 2020, a trio of new Luminor Marina watches, featuring additional luminous elements, pay a befitting tribute to Panerai’s robust model. Cherry-picking from this trio, we single out the Luminor Marina Fibratech model for further scrutiny.

Sized at 44mm across and with the signature cuff-shredding crown guard, the Luminor Marina already has an abundance of wrist presence.  However, the FibratechTM case of this model gives it a raw aesthetic which is befits its sturdy personality.

Panerai state that their FibratechTM material is made by infusing basalt rock and minerals binding them with polymers which are then heat and pressure treated. While this high-tech process does give it an interesting organic texture, more importantly it means that it wears 60% lighter than steel on the wrist and has anti-corrosive properties to boot.

Evolving the illuminated qualities of the collection, and bringing it to a whole new aesthetic level,  Panerai have used a longer lasting luminous material, SuperLuminova “X1” on their “70 Years of Luminor” models.  Better still, this highly intensive and longer lasting material has been incorporated onto the inner bezel ring, the crown and crown guard and onto the strap stitching.  So, by day this Panerai Luminor Marina Fibratech model carries the clean styling and usability you’d expect from a tool-ish timepiece, but by night it promises to give off a paranormal glow.

Inside, beats one of Panerai’s automatic in-house Calibre P.9010 movements featuring a Glucydur balance, an Incabloc anti-shock device, and two barrels which enable a 3-day reserve of power.

Complementing the case material this model carries an anthracite dial which has a sunray finish.  The dial has the Panerai speciality sandwich structure, which is as it sounds - two dial layers between which a generous spreading of luminous substance has been added.  Functions are hours minutes, small seconds and date and it will happily keep ticking to depths of up to 300m.

The Luminor Marina Fibratech PAM 1119 comes presented on a black Sportech strap with luminescent stitching with an additional black rubber strap also supplied.  The model will be a boutique-only edition, limited to 270 pieces.
