Merging retro accents with contemporary styling, the new TAG Heuer x Fragment Design Calibre Heuer 02 Chronograph watch represents the latest dalliance between TAG Heuer and Hiroshi Fujiwara’s design house.
The Fragment Design marque is enough to elevate the coolness of any item, so it goes that the latest limited edition TAG Heuer x Fragment design watch will be a highly desirable piece. And, even those who steer clear of designer-influenced watches will find that this 70s inspired timepiece with its clean dial arrangement is well worth a second look.
The founder of the streetwear brand Fragment Design, Hiroshi Fujiwara is an aficionado of vintage watches, and it shows. This piece not only stays faithful to the cushion-cased TAGs from the 1970s also known as the “C-case”, it has been penned to be understated, with branding and dial clutter kept to a minimum. So, with this superb new collaborative watch, you get hints of automobile racing inspiration, a smidgeon of case overspill and an eye-pleasingly empty dial which is bereft of superfluous trappings.
The piece carries a stainless steel case sized at 44mm topped with a ceramic tachymeter bezel. Against a dial of black opaline, the white indications and red/white hands are standout features, while the vivid hour markers exhibit diminutive proportions. Two counters, for the 12-hours and 30-minutes, give the layout a tidy aesthetic, and the date window is darkened to conform to the overall plain feel of the piece. Twin lightning bolts at the 12 o’clock and subtle branding at 5 o’clock pronounce that the piece has the Fragment Design stamp of approval.
The model is powered by the Heuer 02 Automatic Chronograph movement, which incorporates a column wheel and vertical clutch mechanism and is equipped with a power reserve of 80 hours. A blood-red sapphire caseback all but obscures the calibre but even so, stylistas will no doubt appreciate this unusual addition.
The TAG Heuer x Fragment Design Calibre Heuer 02 Chronograph comes presented on a five-row steel bracelet and will be limited to 500 pieces.
