The Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Plasma Ceramic watch brings a thoroughly modern twist to a classic collection.
It’s not the first time the renowned brand have embraced the use of ceramic for their Grande Seconde collection, having previously released a rather striking black ceramic case edition. However, by introducing a highly technical method to the ceramic production, which involves oven firing to 20,000⁰C, the white ceramic is vaporised and its appearance is transformed. So, although the striking case of the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Plasma Ceramic model has a metallic aesthetic, it still retains the all the scratch-resistance, feather-light density and durable properties of ceramic.
Aside from the challenges posed by the construction of the 41.5mm case, an extraordinary level of craftsmanship has been devoted to the Jaquet Droz in-house 2663 SQ movement which powers the piece. Here, meticulous skeletonisation has reduced the calibre to its bare bones, so that the gear train offers the illusion of appearing suspended between the front and back sapphire
In order to offer a full appreciation of the calibre on the dial side, the centre of the hours and minutes subdial has been minimised and the generous seconds counter has been pared back so that only its slender chapter ring remains. Made from individual sapphire discs, the subdials are secured with visible screws. Although diminished in presence, their gentle overlapping profile which forms Jaquet Droz’s fortuitous number 8 is still an instantly recognisable feature.
Through the rear sapphire crystal, the reverse side of the darkened and skinnied bridges is revealed. Particularly eye-pleasing is the fully skeletonised rotor whose radical reduction ensures that nothing is obscured.
Adhering to the modern styling codes of the piece, the Jaquet Droz Grande Seconde Skelet-One Plasma Ceramic comes presented on grey textile strap with a steel and plasma ceramic folding clasp. For those with a penchant for a more traditional aesthetic, the model is also available in an 18-carat red gold case edition.
